So, I'm rejoining "the fold" as it were and joining RadicalEucalyptus in starting up magic again after what is now an extended hiatus. I'm looking at building a deck up and have no cards to my name, which means, I'm basically just going to be buying one deck since I have no plans to play any standard other that pre-releases...which aren't even really standard I suppose. I've been looking at decks that are fairly successful and familiarizing myself with the newer cards. How viable does a Spanish Inquisition (which as far as I can tell is R/W focused Creature control/burn with some constructive lifegain added in) look in 5-color? I mean obviously Ajani Vengeant is a must, I'm liking Kumano and Firebane Angel. Maybe Chandra? I guess I'm looking for some input on absolutely needed cards. Any thought is welcome -TKDK

Would this be an ante deck with no proxies or are you looking to play it in 5C tournaments? If it's for tournaments, then it's probably not very good. Combo is king in 5C.

For absolutely necessary cards, I'd start with the following R/W cards. I'd defintely take the control route with this deck, there are a lot more powerful options available 4 Lightning Helix 4 Ajani Vengeant 4 Firemane Angel I'd also consider getting 4 Fact or Fiction 4 Contract From Below 4 Fire/Ice 4 Tarmogoyf At the very least if budget is no concern

I was looking at it as more of a control deck. Centered around a few fatties that I would want to get on the board through tutors or whatnot and then be able to protect long enough to swing. Plenty of burn. I can't afford the Tarms but I was thinking I might drop the money for an Elspeth and just tutor for her when needed. Like I said, I'm just getting back into it so I'm not completely up to speed on cards that are recent. Probably Sword to Plowshares and it's new incarnation, I was looking at some recent builds for the deck and I like most of the engines I see in them, particularly the Kamigawa block Inquisition, just looking for some more learned insight. -TKDK

Are you planning on playing this in tournaments or playing it for ante? If tournaments, PROXY THAT SHIT. I'll still make fun of you, but at least then you might have the satisfaction of bashing my face with the very proxies I mock you for. If you're just building a deck to play pickup games for ante, then I understand not running the goyfs... I don't play them despite already owning them simply because I don't want to lose them.

I have a weird sense of pride about fake cards that was instilled in me after I played a Masters Academy deck for a while. After smashing some faces about with it during lunch someone told me I should look up the cost of building the deck, at the time it was ridiculous and I immediately discontinued using it. Ever sense then I won't use Proxies. Radical and I talked about it last night and agreed that for now we won't use them, but, maybe down the road it's something to look into. For now I want to use the deck for casual magic at a local store and to play against Radical over Skype. The deck is looking feasible it's just a matter of getting some more seasoned insight into exact card lists. Later today I should have a rough list build sans lands and I'll post that. While I'm typing, any thoughts on: Heat Shimmer Inquisitors Snare (I mean... come on... the name alone) Invincible Hymn (mid game when I have some control in hand?) Battlegrace Angel Hallowed Burial (seems an obvious choice but maybe there's a reason not to play it?) Searing Meditation (I could see this being a central engine to the win much like the 2005 Kamigawa TSI deck. In 5-color I would have plenty ways to keep it in play and plenty of legit lifegain spells at my disposal) -TKDK

Seems like a feasible archetype for 5-color. -TKDK

check my old budget control/ramp list out, it's pretty cheap, no real duals etc You'll have to add 50 cards.... If I were to play this again I would put the tooth and nail, kikki jikki/sky hussar combo back in I actually won a game after I took them out by casting tooth and nail and naming them, my opponent scooped and then I realized they weren't even in my deck OOPS, LOL Artifacts 4 Fellwar Stone 4 Loxodon Warhammer 1 Triskelion 1 Sol Ring 1 Mana Vault 1 Chaos Orb Black 4 Tainted Pact 4 Damnation 4 Vindicate 3 Putrefy 1 Teneb, the Harvester 1 Mephidross Vampie 1 Demonic Tutor 1 Cruel Tutor 1 Shred Memory Blue 4 Fact or Fiction 4 Bant Charm 4 Rhox War Monk 3 Trygon Predator 2 Simic Sky Swallower 1 Emperial Archangel 1 Vorosh, the Hunter 1 Dimir Infiltrator Green 4 Bird of Paradise 4 Tinder Wall 4 Sakura Tribe Elder 4 Wall of Roots 4 Wall of Blossoms 4 Troll Ascetic 4 Exploration 4 Kodama's Reach 4 Gift of the Gargantuan 4 Garruk Wildspeaker 4 Natural Order 4 Tooth and Nail 4 Rude Awakening 2 Woodfall Primus 1 Eternal Witness 1 Recollect 1 Regrowth 1 Sylvan Scrying 1 Crop Rotation 1 Fastbond Red 4 Firespout 4 Vexing Shusher 4 Burning Tree Shaman 4 Bogardan Hellkite 2 Flameblast Dragon 2 Hellkite Overlord White 4 Invincible Hymn 4 Feudkiller's Verdict 4 Swords to Plowshares 4 Wrath of God 4 Kitchen Finks 4 Loxodon Hierarch 4 Mystic Enforcer 4 Mirari's Wake 2 Sacred Ground 1 Enlightened Tutor 1 Academy Rector 1 Balance 1 Weathered Wayfarer Land 8 Forest 8 Plains 8 Swamp 8 Island 8 Mountain 4 Horizon Canopy 4 Temple Garden 4 Stomping Ground 4 Overgrown Tomb 4 Breeding Pool 4 Jungle Shrine 2 Naya Panorama 2 Bant Panorama 2 Jund Panorama 2 Grixis Panorama 2 Esper Panorama 2 Boseiju 2 Volrath's Stronghold 1 Library of Alexandria 1 Tolaria West
