TLDR: "I haven't played since 2002 when tournaments were won by accumulating the most value in ante cards, and I lack any frame of reference to discuss the subject"
There were other tournaments besides the 2001 Magic Invitational that used that stupid rule?
BTW, I have Kai's Jeweled Bird now. I'm going to frame it.
I dunno... I never played in any like that, but I assumed that's what he was talking about when he mentioned his friend losing a tournament due to his ante being too valuable. It's entirely possible he's never even seen a 5-color "tournament," and doesn't even know what we're talking about.
Glad to see these changes.
I've been playing 5color for about 9 years now (i was in the 5color yahoo group. the one that random spam kick started again briefly in april of this year). Our group of friends were becoming more and more disappointed with changes made to the format over the last few years. About 7 or 8 months ago we finally abandoned 5 color completely. We've been playing our own highlander no search ante format and even some elderdragon highlander (bleh). I expect these changes to fully reinvigorate our groups interest in 5color.
Thanks to Zombor for having the balls to do what needed to be done for this great format.
Is that what this thread has become, hanging off of Zombor's balls? Hell. I wanted to thank Jeremy Bush for finally making 5 color what it used to be. I met Jeremy in madison in the late 90's or early 00's at some ballroom with a bar in the basement during an extened ptq. It was there that myself and the entirity of the wausau group of magic players embraced 5-color and still play to this day, my deck has a completely proxied mana base, and houses my only 2 pieces of power. I Love 5 color, and have missed it. thank you Jeremy for reestablishing it. I only wish I could find someone to play against here in North Carolina. Made a mistake moving from Green Bay. No one to play magic against.
In our area most of us lost interest when contract became restricted and the restrictions and bannings kept coming. We just started playing again with the new rules and we all love it! So far we have 4 players in the Duluth, MN area getting back into 5 color.
